Greater Wellington rapt with Plain English recognition
Greater Wellington’s communications team is delighted that Greater Wellington’s quarterly magazine — Our Region — was selected as a finalist for a Plain English Award.
“We’ve worked hard to make Our Region as ‘plain English’ as possible, and this is exactly the sort of recognition that will inspire us to do even better with all of Greater Wellington’s publications,” says Greater Wellington’s Communications Manager Brett Sangster.
Brett says that when Greater Wellington’s flagship quarterly publication (formerly Elements) was redesigned earlier this year, the main goal was to make it more readable and relevant.
“Our Region is delivered to nearly every domestic letterbox in the region — that’s over 180,000 households. We’ve got heaps of information that we need to cover but we also need to make sure it’s something that every householder in the region can read and understand.
“But trying to present information on Greater Wellington’s wide-ranging work programme — water supply, public transport, pest control, flood protection and all the other services that keep our region moving — is challenging, to say the least.
“Fortunately, our communications team has made a huge effort with every issue of Our Region to transform what can be very technical information into content that is concise and, most importantly, interesting.”
Brett says credit must be given to WriteMark for their invaluable work in promoting plain English. “It’s important because it’s all about making sure the intended audience of a publication can actually understand what they’re reading. And too often that doesn’t happen. So thank you to WriteMark for letting us know that we’re getting it right.”
