Hutt City Council

Finalist in the Best Plain English Document — Public / NGO Sector category

Now that you have your building consent

Hutt City Council’s Building Inspections team say they were delighted and surprised to be selected as a finalist in the just announced WriteMark New Zealand Awards: Best plain English document category Public Sector.

‘Building consents can be complicated, and the process can intimidate some people.  Plain English documents like this are useful as well to help our staff explain things.

‘The building industry is going through a lot of change at the moment, and so it’s great to get some positive acknowledgment for the work we do in our area of it,’ Gary Tipler says.

HCC Chief Executive Tony Stallinger says it is important, though not always easy, to provide information to customers that they are able to understand straight away and that is clear and concise.

‘Like so much of what we do, this is a technical area with specialist language.  The experts talk in initials, like CCC, and it’s almost a code.  But of course they understand each other.’

‘The challenge is to translate all this into information for ordinary people that takes nothing for granted, yet doesn’t lose anything of the precise technical meaning,’ Tony Stallinger says.

‘I commend Gary and his team for putting the effort in to make their messages clear to people who are not specialists.   It is really a very significant achievement for us, endorsing our commitment to provide information to our customers that is relevant, and easy to understand.’
