Susan Kleimann, PhD, President of Kleimann Communication Group, Inc,, has over 35 years of experience with public and private sector organizations. An internationally recognised expert on the tangible benefits of plain language,Susan is a sought-after speaker and practitioner on qualitative research methods, particularly user-centered design, and disclosure development for complex rules and regulations.
Since founding Kleimann Communication Group in 1997, Susan has led numerous research and document design projects to connect public or organisational policy with people in a meaningful way. She and her team have evaluated and redesigned many high-profile documents that have produced measurable results for both the organisation and consumers.
In her most recent national project, Susan and her company led the development and testing of the required key disclosures for applications and closings of all U.S. home mortgage loans. In other projects, they developed and tested the financial privacy notice, now used by nearly all U.S. financial institutions.
Some of Susan’s many clients include the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission, and Consumers Union. Susan has testified before the Senate about the information needs of the elderly, served as an expert witness, won numerous awards for her work, and published many articles and books.
Susan serves as Vice Chair of the U.S Center for Plain Language and, inspired by the WriteMark Awards, began and has chaired the Center’s ClearMark Awards program since 2010. She also served as the second Director of the Document Design Center at the American Institutes for Research.
