Judging process for the 2009 WriteMark New Zealand Plain English Awards

The 2009 Plain English Awards were judged by a panel of plain English experts and advocates — two from New Zealand, one from the United States, and one from Australia.

Entries for the Plain English Champion category were sent directly to the judges. Entries for all other awards went through a three-step process.

  1. Documents and websites were screened against a number of key elements to create a shortlist, and Sentence Transformation entries were screened against StyleWriter’s language criteria to create a shortlist.
  2. Shortlisted entries were assessed against the WriteMark Plain English Standard.
  3. The judging panel reviewed the entries and made its decisions.

The judges’ decisions are final.

The WriteMark Plain English Standard is used under licence from our sponsor WriteMark Limited.

To assist the judges, screening and assessments were carried out by plain English specialists from our sponsor Write Limited. However, all entries in all categories were sent to the judges.
