Martin Cutts, research director of Plain Language Commission, has been at the heart of the plain-English movement since the mid-1970s. He co-founded the Plain English Campaign in July 1979 and remained a partner in the resulting business of the same name until 1988.
He is one of the most experienced plain-English editors in the United Kingdom, with over 30 years work in the field. He has led more than 1,500 writing-skills courses for government departments, companies, local authorities and law firms. Plain Language Commission’s Clear English Standard appears on more than 14,500 documents.
Cutts is the author of The Oxford Guide to Plain English (OUP, 2009 (3rd ed.)), and several books on plain language in the law. Three of these, including Lucid Law, are on free download from www.clearest.co.uk.
