Making it plain
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) is delighted to be named the Plain English Awards Best Organisation for 2008, says NZTE Chief Executive Tim Gibson.
"We’re working to improve the standard of written material and to develop a plain English culture across NZTE.
"This is very much a work-in-progress, but using plain English has clear benefits for us and for the businesses we work with. Our credibility depends on expressing economic concepts clearly and appropriately.
"Plain English makes our information clearer and easier to understand, motivates clients to approach us and helps us to provide a more efficient service.
"Winning this Award is a real boost for NZTE staff, particularly those who have developed the strategy to build our plain English culture and are working to put plain English principles into practice."
As part of its plain English programme, NZTE has developed a Style Guide and offers writing workshops for staff (run by Write Group).
"NZTE has offices in 38 locations around the world and many foreign language speakers on its staff. This provides both a challenge and an incentive for us to establish a plain English culture," says Tim Gibson.
