Office of the Auditor-General

Winner: Plain English Champion — Best Organisation

Supreme winners Office of the Auditor-General, with Awards founder Lynda Harris

Organisation comment

We set out to make writing clearly and accurately a part of our everyday working life. We want the readers of our reports and documents to easily understand and act on what the Auditor-General says — to be as effective as we can in improving the performance of public sector entities. We trained 300 staff in seven locations in plain English writing skills, and backed that up with supporting activities. Now all our staff know the principles and benefits of writing in plain English and have the essential skills. All forms of our writing have improved — from emails to our document templates to our major published reports — and we're determined to continue improving. We are delighted to win this Plain English Award because it recognises the hard work of everyone involved in the past three years, and encourages us to continue building on those efforts.
