Plain English Champion — Best Project 2011

Judges' comments

Winner:  Ministry of Social Development and People First — United Nations

This is an outstanding project with clear, well-executed plain English objectives. The project included a plain English discussion document and an ‘easy-read’ version.

The writers made every effort to connect with different audiences, making sure that all intended readers could absorb the information easily. The ‘easy-read’ version is also inviting for the general public who can read it at a glance.

The results of the responses tell the success story. This entry was well supported by a wider communications plan.

Finalist: NZ Transport Agency — Safe Teen Driver

This project was extremely well written and designed using plain English principles. It was clear that the writers kept the multiple readers in mind and used creative approaches to reach the varied audience. They not only wrote plainly, but they considered different learning styles so that parents could communicate easily with their teens.

Finalist: Ministry of Social Development — A Home for Life

This was a professionally presented package that was very well written for its audience. It was beautifully designed and enticing to read. The language was clear and the tone of voice was appropriate. The materials made an effort to be inclusive to diverse readers.

Honourable Mention: Saatchi and Saatchi — Public Information and Education Campaign — 2011 Referendum

This entry included a brochure and a video. The brochure is good, but we gave the entry an honourable mention because of the fabulous job they did on the video.  As a communication tool it is brilliantly creative, fascinating, and educational. But it contained very few words, making it difficult to compare to other text-based materials.
